Additional information
As an integrated rehabilitation team, we continually aim to promote independence while patients are on the unit. To assist in assessment and rehabilitation we encourage families and/or carers to ensure patients have hearing aids, dentures, glasses, loosely fitted clothing and appropriate footwear while they are an inpatient to allow them to engage in therapy sessions.
For patients attending our outpatient groups or 1-1 therapy sessions held on any of our hospital sites, we recommend bringing any medication or inhalers you may require during your treatment, along with a drink and snack for after your session. Also, consider wearing loose-fitting clothing and suitable footwear for engaging in therapy.
What we do
The Neurorehabilitation Service is a specialised interdisciplinary pathway for patients with disabling neurological conditions.
We are an integrated service with inpatient beds at the Rakehead Rehabilitation Centre (Burnley General Teaching Hospital) along with a community rehabilitation service covering the Blackburn with Darwen and East Lancashire commissioning areas.
Our inpatient service has 17 beds within a purpose-built centre on the Burnley General Teaching Hospital site, including a rehabilitation flat where patients close to discharge can simulate the home environment. The community rehabilitation team offer therapy across a range of settings including a patient's own home, 24-hour care setting, and outpatient clinics across a range of hospital sites.
The integrated neurorehabilitation team includes a range of healthcare professionals including Rehabilitation Nurses, Neuro Rehabilitation Consultant, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy and Neuropsychology services offering intervention across a variety of settings to meet your individual needs. Therapy could include 1-1 treatment, group therapy or online rehabilitation programmes.
The integrated neurorehabilitation team will carry out a person-centred assessment of your needs, agree goals with you and commence your rehabilitation. This could be as an inpatient providing a 24-hour rehabilitation ethos, or within the community setting where patients will be provided with rehabilitation programmes to develop self-management approaches to manage their individual needs. The team work closely and aim to continue working towards your goals throughout your journey through the neuro pathway.
