What we do

The Integrated Stroke Therapy Service works across the Acute Stroke Team on B2 at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital, Inpatient Stroke Rehabilitation Team on Marsden Ward at Pendle Community Hospital, and the Community Stroke Team which covers the East Lancashire locality.

As an integrated stroke therapy service, we offer stroke rehabilitation to all newly diagnosed stroke patients through to 6 months post-discharge into the community.

We provide specialist stroke services which include Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy and Psychology services across a variety of settings to meet your individual needs. Therapy could include 1-1 treatment, group therapy or online rehabilitation programmes.

The integrated therapy team will carry out a person-centred assessment of your needs, agree goals with you and commence your rehabilitation. This could be as an inpatient, or within the community setting. The team work closely and aim to continue working towards your goals throughout your journey through the stroke pathway.

How to access the service

All patients admitted under the stroke pathway at Royal Blackburn Hospital or Pendle Community Hospital will be referred directly to the inpatient service, all patients are referred into the relevant community stroke team for the locality you live in.

Our community stroke service receives referrals for all newly diagnosed patients with an East Lancashire GP from any healthcare professional. GP referrals are accepted for patients with a confirmed diagnosis of stroke in the last 6 months who have not been seen on the stroke inpatient pathway.

Additional information

As a stroke therapy team we continually aim to promote independence while patients are on the unit. To assist in assessment and rehabilitation we encourage families/ or carers to ensure patients have hearing aids, dentures, glasses, loosely fitted clothing and appropriate footwear while they are an inpatient.

For patients attending our outpatient groups or 1-1 therapy sessions held on any of our hospital sites we recommend bringing any medication or inhalers you may require during your treatment, along with a drink and snack for after your session. Also consider wearing loose fitting clothing and suitable footwear for engaging in therapy.
