Perineal clinic was established 21 years ago as a consultant-led clinic with a specialist perineal midwife and specialist physiotherapist working as a team and in close collaboration with the wider multidisciplinary team.
It is held on a Thursday morning within the outpatient gynaecology department at Burnley General Hospital
Women are seen routinely following third and fourth degree tears and may be referred with perineal wound problems, perineal pain and bladder or bowel problems related to the pregnancy or birth.
The referrals are received from the postnatal ward, community midwives and GPs as well as from other health professionals involved in the care of women in their pregnancy or the first year following the birth of their baby.
