Newborn Infant Physical Examination

All newborn babies have a full examination within 72 hours of birth to screen for conditions relating to the baby’s eyes, heart, hips and testes (if applicable).

These newborn examinations are carried out by midwives who have undergone an advanced qualification or by a neonatal doctor

A neonatal doctor will also be available to review your baby if the midwife identifies a need for this.

This screening examination will be repeated again when the baby is between 6 and 8 weeks of age (infant examination)

Hearing Screening

The newborn hearing screening test is offered to all babies on the ward.

The newborn hearing screening test helps identify babies who have permanent hearing loss as early as possible. This means parents can get the support and advice they need right from the start.
