At ELHT, we're committed to understanding and addressing the challenges faced by people from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds—whether they’re patients, colleagues, or members of our communities.

Recent events, such as the impact of COVID-19 on BAME communities, the ongoing work of the Black Lives Matter movement, and the acts of violence and intimidation following the tragic incident in Southport have highlighted the urgent need for us to do more to improve experiences and outcomes for our BAME patients and workforce.

To truly become an anti-racist organisation, we need to face racism head-on and acknowledge its effects within the NHS. With over 383,000 BAME colleagues making up nearly a quarter of the NHS workforce, it's crucial that we take meaningful steps towards diversity and inclusion.

That’s why we’re embracing the Northwest BAME Assembly’s Anti-Racism Framework. This framework helps us tackle structural racism and discrimination through collaboration, reflection, and accountability. Our approach follows five key principles:

  2. Understand Lived Experiences
  3. Grow Inclusive Leaders
  4. Act to Tackle Inequalities
  5. Review Progress Regularly
