Salaries within the NHS are determined by the UK Government as part of the agenda for change terms and conditions. The salary scales for 2023/24 can be found here in the link below.   Salary scales are reviewed annually from April onwards.

Employees are paid on the 28th of each month, unless this date falls on a weekend or bank holiday, then you will be paid on the Friday before the 28th. As you will arrive at the end of the month, you will be paid on the 28th of the following month.

We will pay you on the top pay point of a band 3 salary for up to 8 months. This is the amount of time you must gain your NMC PIN in, once you arrive in the UK.

When you receive your NMC PIN, we will pay you on the bottom point of a band 5 salary and from here you can work your way up.

We cover the cost of your flight and transfer from the airport to your accommodation.

We pay for 2 months accommodation, including bills, upon arrival.

We provide an ‘essentials’ welcome shop for you and your fellow nurses to share upon arrival to your property. This is a package with basic food and cleaning supplies to see you through the first couple of days.

We provide £105 worth of meal vouchers, which are to be used within our staff restaurants at BGH and RBH.

We will reimburse you for your CBT exam. You need to provide a valid payment receipt for us to process this. We will cover the cost of your first OSCE exam and any hotel or travel costs associated with this.

Should you require a 2nd or 3rd attempt at the OSCE exam, ELHT will cover any up-front costs and deduct these from your monthly salary over 6 months.

We will book you an appointment with a UK bank branch so that you can open a UK bank account within 1 week of arriving.

You should bring enough money to cover the cost of travel to and from work and food for the first 4 weeks, before you are paid. An approximate cost of travel for 1 month on public transport is £80.00 & £30 per week for food items for one person would be sufficient.

All employee’s will be auto enrolled into the NHS Pension scheme unless you choose to opt out.

You can find out what pension contributions you should pay by following this link: https://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/member-hub/cost-being-scheme

All UK workers will have National Insurance contributions (NI) deducted from their salary at a rate of

12% of your total monthly salary.

All UK workers will have to pay PAYE (tax contributions) at a rate of 20% of your total monthly salary.

Your tax code is 1257L. This is for people who have 1 job or pension.

Clothing

Transport to and from work – cost of a monthly bus pass is Blackburn £74 / Burnley £70 / Lancashire £105

Medical and dental treatment

Your Health and Care Worker visa covers you for any visits you may take to the GP and any visits you make to the hospital and any treatment you receive from the hospital.

You will have to pay for any prescriptions that your GP makes for you and the cost of a prescription in the UK is £9.65

You will need to pay for any dental treatment you receive. There are 3 bands for UK NHS dental costs. These are:

Band 1 – £25.80

Band 2 - £70.70

Band 3 - £306.80

For more information on what these bands cover, please follow the below link:

You are sponsored under a Health and Care worker visa. This means that some of the visa costs are reduced or not required.

Costs you will need to consider before you come to the UK, when eligible for a Health and Care worker visa are:

Application fee (up to 3 years) - £247 for worker being sponsored

This fee is the same whether you apply from inside or outside of the UK.

Money to support yourself - £1270

This amount needs to be in your bank account for 28 days in a row and day 28 must be within 31 days of applying for your visa.

ELHT will inform you if you need this money – we may be able to tick the box on your CoS which states we will ‘provide maintenance’ and we will do this by providing single occupancy accommodation upon your arrival to the UK.

If you bring your partner or children to the UK, you will also need to consider the below costs:

Application fee (up to 3 years) - £247 per person

Money to support them:

Partner - £285

First child - £315

Any additional children - £200 per child

You will need to have this money in either yours or your partners bank account for 28 days in a row and day 28 must be within 31 days of applying for their visas. For anyone wanting to bring dependants to the UK, you will need to consider these costs. ELHT do not provide maintenance for dependants.

You will also need to have the visa fee costs ready for when you apply to extend all visas after the initial 3-year period. The maintenance fee is waivered after the initial period as you will have proven that you can support yourself and your family.

When looking for a place to live in the UK, there are several costs you need to consider when you are applying for a home in the rental market. These are:

Security deposit – the cost of this is usually equivalent to 5 weeks rent. When you move out, if the property is in the same condition as it was when you moved in, you should receive this money back.

Holding deposit – you may get this back once any checks are complete or this amount may be take-off of your first month’s rent or security deposit.

Rent in advance – you pay this because your monthly rent covers the month in front NOT the previous month.

Some estate agents also ask that you pay an application fee.

You also need to consider the cost to furnish your home.

You may want to learn how to drive in the UK for easier access to work, school, days out etc. I have included some average costs to consider when looking into driving.

Provisional driver’s license - £34

Theory exam cost - £23

Driving lesson per hour - £25 to £35 per hour

Practical driving test - £62 for a weekday slot and £75 for an evening, weekend, or bank holiday slot

New car - £12,000 to £28,000

Second hand car – follow the link to look at second hand cars available in the UK: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/

Road Tax – follow the link to find the rates: https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-rate-tables

Car insurance - £1000 per year

Diesel – 157.71p per litre

Petrol – 145.96p per litre

Once you have brought your family over to the UK you will need to consider some costs associated with them.

Your partner can work in any occupation under their ‘Dependent visa’ status for as long as your visa remains valid.

You might have brought children over to the UK and if so, you will need to consider childcare costs depending on their age.

Children start school full time in the September after their 4th birthday. This means they turn 5 during their first school year. State schools are free from the age of 5 – 16 years.

Children younger than 5 years will need to attend day care in the form of a nursery or a child minder if there are no other means to look after them whilst you and your partner work. The average costs of nursery and childminders are below:

Nursery - £55 per day

Registered childminder - £45 per day

After school clubs - £67 per week

Please note that you will not be entitled to receive any benefits whilst working in the UK on either a skilled or health and care worker visa.

If you are pregnant or planning to have children once you arrive, please ask for our maternity guidance pack, and read this very carefully before making any decisions to move to the UK.
