Ward B14 at the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital cares for people following surgery for head and neck and urology conditions. 

Ward manager

Visiting times

Visiting times are preferably from 2:30pm – 4:30pm and 6:30pm – 8:00pm however, visiting outside these times can be arranged by contacting the ward and speaking to the nurse in charge.

Please note that a maximum of 3 visitors per patient are permitted at any one time. We also ask relatives not to sit on the patient’s bed.

Ward rounds

Ward rounds usually take place from 7:45am to 11am.

Enquiries about a patient/ relative

We recommend nominating one relative to ring the ward for information who then has the responsibility to communicate the information to the rest of the family. The telephone number is 01254 732527. Please avoid ringing the ward during the ward round (7.45am – 11am).

Meal times (approximate)

Breakfast 7:45am
Lunch 11:45am
Evening meal 5:30pm

The ward has protected meal times – which means that all non-essential interruptions are not allowed . Only essential medical treatment.

Families who wish to help their relative at meal times are welcome. Please arrange with the nurse in charge.

All other visiting is discouraged during protected meal times.

Quiet period

The ward has a quiet hour from 1pm – 2pm. No one is allowed in during this time except for clinical reasons.

How do I arrange to speak to a doctor?

If relatives wish to speak to one of the urology consultants, they must contact the relevant secretary to make an appointment. We will require permission from the patient to allow ward staff to discuss confidential information with relatives.

What do I bring with me?

Storage on the ward is limited and we recommend bringing only 1 small bag. Please bring ensure that you include:
-    your current medications
-    essential toiletries 
-    well fitting, non-slip slippers
-    night-wear

When are patients discharged?

We aim to discharge patients after breakfast if no other arrangements are required. There may be occasional delays if additional medications need to be dispensed by the pharmacy, prior to discharge. Please make appropriate arrangements for your transport home.
