What we do

The Children's Day Surgery Unit (Ward 27) takes children who have been planned to have a minor operation and who are usually discharged home the same day. Parents/carers are encouraged to stay on the unit during their child's stay.

Children and young people also attend the unit to have a variety of medical investigations carried out.

Play Specialists will help keep children occupied whilst they are waiting for their operation and a dedicated team of nursing staff will help get ready for theatre and look after them on their return until they are ready to go home.

Most children will have a pre-operative assessment before the date of their surgery.  A parent or carer must attend this appointment with the child.  Advice will be given on what to do on the day of the operation and what time to come to the unit.  Unfortunately we are only able to look after children who are having operations and cannot accommodate other children on the unit.
