The Children's Day Surgery Unit (Ward 27) is based at Burnley General Hospital and takes children who are having a planned minor operation and who are usually discharged home on the same day. Parents/carers are encouraged to stay on the unit during their child's stay.
Children and young people also attend the unit to have a variety of medical investigations carried out.
Play Specialists will help keep children occupied whilst they are waiting for their operation and a dedicated team of nurses will help them to get ready for theatre and look after them on their return until they are ready to go home.
Most children will have a pre-operative assessment before the date of their surgery. A parent or carer must attend this appointment with the child. Advice will be given on what to do on the day of the operation and what time to come to the unit.
Referrals to this service is via specialist health professionals.
We are situated in Area 6 on Level 1 at Burnley General Hospital.
Ward 27 is open from 7.30am to 6pm Monday to Friday and from 8am to 12.30pm on Saturdays.
We suggest parents/carers bring their own food and drink on the day for yourself. However, there is a hospital restaurant only a short distance away where both hot and cold beverages and food can be purchased.
Advice will be given on what to expect on the day of the operation and what to bring with you, however, we recommend nightwear and personal toiletries.
Your time of arrival should be on your referral letter.
Food and drink will be provided for your child following their operation or investigations. We recomment parents/carers bring their own food and drink (the hospital restaurant is also available a short walk away).
