What we do
The Children’s Allergy Service is a multi-professional team providing a comprehensive service from diagnosis to treatments for children with all kinds of allergies.

The core team comprises of:

  • Three Consultant paediatricians with a specialist interest in allergy
  • A visiting Consultant Allergist from the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital
  • Two Paediatric Allergy Nurse Specialists
  • Two Paediatric Dietitians with a specialist interest in allergy
  • Three secretaries providing medical administrative support amongst other duties

The Children’s Allergy Service at East Lancashire Teaching Hospitals caters for children with various types of allergies, including foods, dust, animal, pollens, drug and venom allergy.

The clinic offers a one-stop service from diagnosis, investigation, treatment and education for children with allergies. We also care for children with related problems of urticaria, angioedema and anaphylaxis as well as those with atopic conditions such as eczema, asthma and rhinitis (hay-fever).

The allergy service at ELHT is part of the North West Children’s Allergy Network (http://allergynorthwest.nhs.uk/) and works closely with clinicians in other hospitals in the region as well as GPs, dietitians, feeding advisors, school health advisors and patient representatives to deliver the best care and experience for our patients and families.

We are committed to:

  • providing a first-class clinical service to all the children under our care
  • approaching each child as an individual, drawing on the skills of the whole team to provide holistic care
  • ensuring all our clinical staff are experienced specifically in the care of children
  • organising our services around the needs of children and their families
  • listening to our patients and adapting to their needs
  • fostering a learning environment, supporting the educational development of our own staff as well as other health professionals.

What happens in the allergy clinic?
At the children’s allergy clinics, your child will be looked after by a team of specialists who have been trained in looking after children who have allergies. We try and see your child in a ‘one-stop clinic’, which includes taking a full history, examination, allergy tests, education and seeing a dietitian. Your journey through our department is likely to take time so please allow two to three hours for your appointment.
