Based at Burnley General Hospital, Lancashire Women’s and Newborn Centre, Paediatric Physiotherapy support consultants and nursing teams alongside other health professions in caring for babies on the unit. We provide support to parents or carers in positioning and handling their baby as part of the Family Integrated Care (FICare) model of care. Neonatal physiotherapists also provide assessment and treatment of babies whose gross motor skills may be affected as a result of their prematurity, their birth or any diagnosed condition.

Following discharge from NICU, babies will be followed up as an outpatient to monitor their gross motor development and provide advice and support as required.

Premature Babies

Babies born prematurely develop differently to babies born at term. Premature infants are at a greater risk of having a delay in their motor development.

Please see the leaflet on awake time ideas for premature babies.
