What is an Orthosis?
An Orthosis is an external device used to support, align, reduce or correct deformities.
What is a Boxia Foot Up?
The Boxia helps with your walking. If the muscles on the front and/or side of your leg are weak then it may be common for your foot to catch on the floor when you walk. This may lead to you falling over and causing potential serious injury.
When should I wear the Boxia?
It is normal to wear the Boxia Foot Up when you are walking both indoors and outdoors. It can be unclipped for comfort when you are sitting. The Orthotist will advise you when to wear it.
Helpful tips for wearing your Boxia
- We advise to wear the brace with low-heeled shoes/trainers
- The lower down the hook(s) are positioned on the shoe, the more support the brace will provide
- The fastening can wear over time. Contact the department and replacement parts can be arranged for you
How do I put on the Boxia?
Instructions will be given to you at your appointment. Your Orthotist will also explain how to put the brace on.
- Wrap the ankle piece around your ankle and fasten the straps. The D-Loop should be facing your toes
- Position the hook in the tongue of laced shoes. If you are using the eyelet hooks, place these into the third or fourth eyelets down from the top
- Pass the elastic strap through the D-loop on the ankle piece and then pull towards the hook(s). Pull the fastening to secure
Wear and care
It is important to wear the brace over a sock. This is to protect your skin from rubs that may cause open wounds.
We advise you to check your skin thoroughly after every use of the brace. Red marks will be present on the skin but should fade after 30 minutes.
If red marks are still visible on your foot/ankle after 30 minutes and appear and the redness has not faded, please contact the Orthotics department
We advise to hand wash with soap and lukewarm water as and when required to keep the brace in good condition.
