What to expect?
At your initial appointment, your clinician will discuss what matters to you and how we can support you. Your clinician will carry out an assessment to help determine what management options may be available to you to help you reach your recovery goals. A large part of our treatment includes advice, education and exercise. Our aim is to support patients in not only the short-term, but also the long-term management of conditions and the prevention of potential recurrence. You may be asked to partially undress to enable a thorough assessment to be carried out.
What do I need to bring to my appointment?
It would be helpful if you could bring a change of clothes to your appointment, such as shorts and a vest, as this will make physical assessments easier. It can also be helpful if you bring a list of any medications, you are currently taking, including any pain relief and/or over the counter medications.
What is Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy helps to restore movement and function, especially if you’ve been affected by injury, illness, or disability. It also helps to reduce the risk of future injuries. Physiotherapy can be helpful for people of all ages with a range of conditions.
Is this the right place for me?
Following your assessment, your clinician will aim to fully inform you of all the options available to help you manage your condition and to work in partnership with you to develop an evidence-based management plan that suits you and helps to meet your expectations. This could also involve discussion around referral on to other services if appropriate.

What is patient initiated follow up (PIFU)?
PIFU puts you in control of making an appointment when you feel you need it as opposed to attending a follow up within a set timeframe, which you may not need. It means you will have direct access to support when you feel you need it. Research has shown that regular visits do not always help to prevent your condition returning or identify new problems but can potentially cause unnecessary anxiety.
I have been referred for an x-ray/scan how do I access this?
X-rays are normally walk in appointments, so you will not receive a specific appointment. Please ask your Physiotherapist where your closest department would be. If you have been referred for an MRI or ultrasound you will be allocated an appointment, you may be waiting 6-8 weeks before you receive this. Please click here to check how to access your x-ray.
