Many patients having major surgery will be cared for in the Critical Care Unit or Post Operative Care Unit (POCU) following their operation.

These areas are managed by intensive care doctors and nurses where we can provide close monitoring and specialist treatments often required after surgery. Don't be alarmed if you are attached to various wires and machines that quite often make different noises, these are all there to keep you safe.

Most patients are moved to a surgical ward after 24-48 hours and skilled staff will assist you to achieve your enhanced recovery goals in the first day or two.

All other members of the team will be involved in your care whilst on Critical Care or POCU: Physiotherapists, Dietiticians, Pharmacists, the Acute Pain Team and the Enhanced Recovery Team.
