In celebration of World Breastfeeding Week 2024, from 1-7 August, East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust (ELHT) is spearheading an educational roadshow to enhance breastfeeding support across its paediatric services.
Leading this initiative are Baby Friendly Specialist Midwife Lisa Jenkinson and Children’s Observation and Assessment Unit Sister and Paediatric Baby Friendly Initiative Lead Nurse Emma Broadhurst. The duo has organised an informative roadshow aimed at educating paediatric colleagues on the various benefits of breastfeeding, ensuring they are well-equipped to support and guide new mothers.
"Promoting the benefits of breastfeeding and ensuring every mum has the support she needs is our passion," said Lisa Jenkinson. "By working closely with our colleagues, and sharing knowledge and ideas, we can create a positive and supportive environment for breastfeeding within ELHT and the wider community."
On Friday, 2 August, Lisa and Emma visited the Children’s Unit and the Paediatric Unit in the Emergency Department at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital. During their visits, they provided valuable insights into breastfeeding, emphasising its importance for both mother and baby.
In addition to sharing breastfeeding information, Lisa and Emma highlighted local infant feeding support groups available to new mums. These groups offer essential peer support and professional guidance, helping mothers overcome challenges and succeed in their breastfeeding journey.
This year, World Breastfeeding Week focuses on the themes of survival, health, and wellbeing, with particular emphasis on improving breastfeeding support to reduce societal inequalities, especially during emergencies and times of crises.
The efforts of Lisa and Emma during World Breastfeeding Week highlights the Trust’s dedication to maternal and child health. Their work ensures that breastfeeding support is seamlessly integrated into everyday care, benefiting both mothers and infants alike.
