East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust (ELHT) has received a strong endorsement as a place to work by achieving its best ever results in the annual NHS National Staff Survey…for the second year in a row.
More than 3,300 ELHT filled in the survey with the Trust rated highly for having motivated and engaged, 92 per cent benefitting from their annual work performance appraisal, and 80 per cent believing patient care is the Trust’s top priority.
Other questions in which staff rated East Lancashire Hospitals in the top 20 per cent of all NHS Trusts in England were:
- Staff satisfaction with the quality of work and care they are able to deliver
- Staff satisfaction with resources and support
- Effective use of patient / service user feedback
- Low percentage of staff experiencing harassment, bullying or abuse in last 12 months
- Staff able to contribute to work improvements
Kevin McGee, Chief Executive of East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “I am delighted with the results of the latest NHS National Staff Survey which shows that, as an organisation, we continue to improve in how we support our most important asset – our staff.
“Overall, I think this independently-verified survey shows that we are a great organisation to work for which provides excellent career opportunities and sincerely cares about its employees.”
Other questions in which staff rated East Lancashire Hospitals in the top 20 per cent of all NHS Trusts in England were:
- Staff believe the Trust takes positive action to protect staff health and wellbeing
- Staff are able to provide the quality of care they aspire to
- Staff believe the Trust acts on concerns raised by patients and service users.
Survey results also show that staff rate East Lancashire Hospitals highly for having enough colleagues to do their job properly, not having to work additional paid or unpaid hours, and satisfaction with their level of pay.
“We are known as a Trust for our friendly, supportive atmosphere, and have traditionally performed strongly in most areas of the National Staff Survey,” added Kevin McGee.
“However, we have worked hard to improve in other areas, such as those relating to personal development, and health and wellbeing, so it’s great to see we have made significant improvements.”
The annual National Staff Survey collects the experiences and opinions of NHS staff on a range of matters such as training, job satisfaction, quality of care provided to patients and work-related stress.
East Lancashire Hospitals is in the highest (best) 20% of Acute Trusts across the country in 16 of the Survey’s 32 key findings:
- Staff satisfaction with the quality of work and care they are able to deliver.
- Percentage able to contribute towards improvements at work.
- Effective team working.
- Percentage appraised in last 12 months.
- Staff satisfaction with resourcing and support.
- Percentage working extra hours.
- Percentage feeling unwell due to work related stress in the last 12 months.
- Organisation and management interest in and action on health and wellbeing.
- Percentage experiencing physical violence from patients, relatives or the public in last twelve months.
- Percentage reporting most recent experience of violence.
- Percentage experiencing harassment, bullying or abuse from staff in the last 12 months.
- Percentage reporting most recent experience of harassment, bullying or abuse.
- Percentage reporting errors, near misses or incidents witnessed in last month.
- Fairness and effectiveness of procedures for reporting errors, near misses and incidents.
- Staff confidence and security in reporting unsafe clinical practice.

“We are not complacent as there is still more we can do, but this is extremely encouraging and our staff should be very proud of themselves for their hard work and commitment to our values which has helped improve our results.”
The National Staff Survey ran from September to December 2017 with a total of 3,375 ELHT staff completing it.
Kevin McGee continued: “The survey also identified areas where we can improve and we will be looking at the results very closely to ensure further improvements are made for the benefit of our staff and patients.”
