East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust (ELHT) has been chosen by The Royal Mint as one of just ten NHS organisations across England to take part in its Great British Coin Hunt.

ELHT’s five hospitals will be releasing a limited number of special ‘NHS’ design 10p coins starting tomorrow (Wednesday 18 July) via its onsite restaurants to mark 70 years since the start of the NHS. East Lancashire Hospitals is the only NHS Trust in the north west of England to be selected for this special scheme.

Created as part of The Royal Mint’s ‘Great British Coin Hunt’ the ‘NHS’ 10p coin celebrates one of the many things that makes Britain great. To get your hands on one of the special 10p coins, visitors should check their change when they make a cash purchase in the restaurants at Royal Blackburn, Burnley General and community hospitals at Clitheroe, Accrington Victoria and Pendle (coffee shop).

Kevin McGee, Chief Executive of East Lancashire Hospitals, said: “ELHT has a proud heritage and is known for pioneering new and innovative techniques and treatments, so we’re delighted to have been chosen to participate in The Great British Coin Hunt. We look forward to playing a part in these special ‘NHS’ 10p coins making their way across East Lancashire and beyond.”

Anne Jessopp, Chief Executive of The Royal Mint, said: “The ‘N’ for NHS has proved a very popular choice with the public as a Great British Coin Hunt 10p theme. The NHS is a well-respected national institution – most Britons will come into contact with it at some time in their lives, so it was a natural choice.”

Additional coins launched as part of a whole alphabet of special 10p pieces celebrating national institutions include a double decker bus (D), King Arthur (K), queuing (Q) and of course a tea pot (T). Alternatively you can buy the coins direct from The Royal Mint.

If you find one of the special ‘NHS’ 10p coins please take a photo of you with the coin and share it with East Lancashire Hospitals on its Facebook or Twitter pages using the hashtag #ifoundone
