Volunteers at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust (ELHT) have teamed up with the Lancashire Volunteer Partnership and local knitting groups to help people living with dementia.
Lead Nurse for dementia at ELHT, Sandra Nuttall said:
“At a meeting a short while ago, one of our nurses highlighted the benefits of twiddlemuffs for people living with dementia and how we always need more.
“Twiddlemuffs are knitted bands that benefits some people living with dementia by providing visual and tactile sensory stimulation and reducing anxiety, which is a common trait for people living with dementia.
“Following this meeting, a plea was issued and a number of local knitters got busy with their needles. As a result, we now have a supply of twiddlemuffs available for patients or relatives to collect from our hospital main receptions.
“To prevent any spread of infection, the Trust can only gift twiddlemuffs to individual patients for them to take home, so we do require a constant supply.
“We are extremely grateful to all volunteers who have given their time and skills to produce these twiddlemuffs so if you would like to help someone living with dementia then get knitting today! You can find an extremely easy to follow pattern here. You can deliver any donations to any of our hospitals.”
