A clerical worker at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital has won two bronze medals at the 2024 British Transplant Games.

Catherine Makin, who underwent a double lung transplant in 2020, was a medal winner in the table tennis and 50m breaststroke competitions.

The Transplant Games, that were held in Nottingham this month, are the flagship project of the charity Transplant Sport and are open to transplant recipients and live donors from across the UK and Ireland.

Catherine, a clerical worker in the General Outpatients Department, said: “The games weekend is a busy and exhausting weekend full of fun, laughter and meeting old and new friends.

“It’s also about reminding ourselves that we are all here because of our donors and their families, which without none of us would be here.

“To win medals is amazing and it makes me feel so proud that I can participate.

“As always, my donor and family are never far from my mind, and I am grateful to them for letting me have a second chance at life.”

Catherine has enjoyed swimming and playing table tennis from a young age and has won a total of seven gold, silver and bronze medals at the British Transplant Games over the last three years.

Running for over 40 years, the Games are a celebration of life and take place in different host cities every summer.

The four-day event attracts around 1,000 transplant athletes and more than 1,700 supporters.

The Games are used to raise awareness of the need for organ donation, encourage transplant recipients to lead active lifestyles and show appreciation for, and remember their donors and their families.
