The iconic Morecambe Bay Sands is a unique stretch of sand and sea that spans a staggering 10 miles along the Lancashire coast.

On Saturday 1 June 2024, we will be guided by Michael Wilson, the official guide of the Guide over Sands Trust, from Arnside to Grange over Sands, approximately an 8-mile journey.

The walk is on varied terrain including sections of sand, shingle, pebbles, rock and salt marsh. his challenging walk takes approximately four hours to complete depending on the route - which is confirmed on the day.

Be prepared and bring along:

  • Your personal medication
  • A charged mobile phone
  • Sun cream because sand, sun and sea can be a fierce combination
  • Refreshments - sandwich, snacks, water
  • A sun hat and sunglasses
  • Breathable lightweight clothing, waterproof layers and a few extra layers if you feel the cold but also to protect from the sun

The walk will take 3-4 hours covering a distance of 6-9 miles from Arnside to Grange. Parts of the walk may be challenging. Changeable weather and a varying terrain will be encountered.  First and foremost you should be able to walk up to 9 miles. Underfoot,  Arnside to the shore includes sand, footpaths, lanes and marshland.  The bulk of the crossing is flat sand often rippled and sometimes covered in water.  Half way across you will navigate the Kent River where you can expect an average depth of up to 2ft (60cm) for a distance of some 50m.  The final leg of the walk is over marsh:this is a clear pathway but may sometimes be slippery. Please ensure that all those under 18 taking part in the walk after supervised by an adult at all times.
