Toddlers should be physically active every day for at least 180 minutes (3 hours). This should be spread throughout the day, including playing outdoors.

This can include light activity such as rolling and playing, as well as more energetic activity like skipping, hopping, running and jumping. Active play, such as using a climbing frame, riding a bike, playing in water and ball games, is the best way for this age group to get moving.

  • Get active every day - find an activity they enjoy, such as sports or walking to school
  • Aim to give them a healthy, balanced diet that includes fruit and vegetables, starchy foods, protein and dairy or dairy alternatives
  • Encourage a healthy attitude to eating – you can be a good role model by staying active and eating healthily yourself

  • Let your toddler walk with you rather than always using the buggy
  • Toddlers and young children love going to the park, where they can climb and swing or just run around
  • Toys your child can pick up and move around will help improve their co-ordination and develop the muscles in their arms and hands
  • Involve your toddler in household tasks like unpacking shopping, tidying or sorting washing
  • Teach your child songs with actions and encourage them to dance to music

Getting outdoors and going on walks or to the park is another great way to help your child keep active. Encourage them to play outside, in the garden or with friends. Or consider taking them to the local swimming pool.

Note: Children under 5 should not be inactive for long periods, except when they're asleep.
