What is an Orthosis?

An Orthosis is an external device used to support, align, reduce or correct deformities.

What is Compression Hosiery?

Compression hosiery, or stockings, are a type of compression support. They can help to control swelling and increase blood pressure in the lower legs.

Why has compression hosiery been supplied to me?

Your Orthotist should explain to you why it may be useful for you to use compression hosiery. This could be because of:

  • Oedema
  • Swelling of the lower limbs
  • Poor venous return
  • Postural hypotension
How do I put on and take off the compression hosiery?

The hosiery must be worn against the skin to work effectively. Before applying the garments, remove all jewellery (rings/bracelets) and trim long nails on fingers and toes.

1) Turn the garment inside-out as far as the heel pouch

2) Slip the foot into the garment.

3) Position the toes and heel correctly in the garment

4) Pull the rest of the garment up onto the leg.

5) Check there are no wrinkles or creases in the garment.

You can coat the leg with powder to help with putting on the garment. If you are struggling with putting the garments on you may be eligible for an application aid to help you. Please discuss this with your Orthotist.

To remove the garments, peel down the garment to your ankle and then pull the toe section gently.

Wear and Care

Please follow manufacturer’s guidelines for washing and ironing instructions.

We advise against wearing the hosiery garments overnight. Only wear the garments overnight if you have been advised to by your doctor.

If your hosiery garments have ladders or holes, please contact the Orthotics department.

If you have red marks on your skin for more than 30 minutes after taking off the garments, contact the Orthotics department.
