The department provides a mortuary service to ELHT hospital sites and also serves HM Coroners in Blackburn and East Lancashire jurisdictions for deaths in the community.

The Blackburn site is licensed with the Human Tissue Authority (HTA) for the undertaking of Post Mortem examinations and removal and storage of tissues from the deceased. The Designated Individual under the HTA licence is Andrew Sloan.

The department also carries out Forensic post mortems with Home Office Pathologists and the Police.
