The Intermediate Care Wards (19 and 22) at Burnley General Hospital provide a variety of services including rehabilitation, complex discharge planning, ongoing medical oversight and intervention, and palliative and end of life care.

The team - comprosing nursing, health care assistants (HCAs), therpaists and doctors - will discuss with you what your ongoing needs and goals are and how we can work with you to achieve this. We want to work with you to help you to achieve your goals and to help you to meet your needs on discharge. We are committed to discharging you from hospital as soon as it is safe to do so.

We hope you enjoy your stay on our ward. Should you or your family wish to discuss any element of your stay in hospital, please ask to speak to the Ward Manager or Matron. We are always keen to hear feedback and you will be asked to complete a short survey about your stay when you leave.

Please ask your family or friends to bring in clothes and toiletries or activities to support your recovery

Whilst a patient on our wards, you will have access to nursing and health care assistant (HCA) support at all times.

Ward 19 and Ward 22 have medical cover Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm should you require this.

In the evenings, overnight and weekends you will have acces to an acute care team and a doctor should you require their input.

Our team of therapists will provide support to you based upon your assessment and goals. You may have been transferred for rehabilitation, in which case a tailored plan based on individual goals will be developed for you.

Therapists may see you to prevent deconditioning whilst you are in hospital if you are not transferred for rehabilitation

Before you are ready to leave hospital, the Complex Care Team will provide you with the advice and support you need to make the right choices regarding your discharge from hospital.

ELHT remains commited to supporting John’s Campaign for people living with dementia and complex needs.

This reaffirms the right for relatives/carers to stay with patients who have dementia to support their needs. Those utilising John’s Campaign can be offered flexible visiting hours including overnight stays if required, and drinks and snacks as ward stocks allow.

Please speak to the nurse in charge of the clinical area for more details or contact the ELHT Dementia Lead Nurse for further support.

Call for Concern, also known as Martha's Rule, is a service available to all patients and their loved ones to use if they feel their condition is deteriorating (rapidly becoming more unwell) and have tried to raise their concerns to the doctors and nurse on the ward but don't feel listened to.

Use Call for Concern:

  • If you or your loved one becomes more unwell over a short space of time
  • If it doesn't feel like you or your loved one is being treated for this by the ward doctors and nurses
  • Or they are not listening your concerns about you or your loved one feeling more unwell

Call directly on 01254 735637 and say you have a call for concern. You will need the patient’s name, the ward they are on, a brief description of the problem and your contact details and relationship to the patient.
