Colleagues from East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust cycled from Manchester to Blackpool on Sunday, 9 July in tribute to their dear friend and colleague Jonathon Priestley.

Chief Executive Martin Hodgson led the team of 19 cyclists to undertake the gruelling 60-mile challenge, which started from Salford Quays and finished at Blackpool’s South Promenade, in honour of their colleague who had planned to cycle the route himself but sadly died before this could happen.

Chief Executive Martin Hodgson said: “Jonathan or ‘JP’ as he was known was passionate about enhancing patient experience in our hospitals and had intended to conquer this challenge himself to raise funds for the Trust’s charity ELHT&Me.Cycling group picture.jpg

“Instead, I had the incredible privilege of completing the event alongside 19 amazing colleagues and together, we honoured his memory by making sure his wish became a reality.

“JP’s presence was felt every pedal of the way, and his spirit inspired us to push beyond our limits. We not only completed the 60-mile challenge but we also created a lasting tribute to a remarkable individual.”

Jonathon joined the Trust as Directorate Manager for Radiology, in December 2019 after previously working in Radiology at Salford Royal Foundation Trust.

He was diagnosed with lung cancer in May 2022 and even during treatment, he remained a constant support to his team and directorate. He passed away in December 2022.

Almost £6,000 has been raised by the cycle ride and once all the funds have been collected the team will decide what equipment will be a fitting tribute for his department.
