An East Lancashire Hospitals Trust team that has helped more than 1,500 local veterans is up for a national award set to be broadcast on TV.

Fiona Lamb and Shafiq Sadiq who make up the Trust’s armed forces and veterans team are finalists in the Best Team category at the Who Cares Wins Awards.

The awards, organised by The Sun in partnership with NHS Charities Together, celebrate the healthcare heroes who go above and beyond to keep us all safe.

The winners will be announced at a star-studded ceremony in London, hosted by Davina MacCall and screened on Channel 4 and All4 from 6.30pm on Sunday, 24 September.

The Trust’s Armed Forces Veterans Advocate, Shafiq Sadiq, said: “We work around the clock to help veterans who find themselves in our hospitals, whether that’s helping find accommodation for homeless veterans or getting support for those who suffer from PTSD or have issues with mental health, alcohol or drugs.

“We were one of the first teams across the country to take on this role and it’s been incredible to see our patients go on to thrive. We’re still in touch with a number of them today.

“Whatever happens on the night, we’re really proud to have got this far and showcase our work on national TV.”

The team was nominated by Andrew Powell, the Managing Director of Burnley-based charity Healthier Heroes. He said: “At Healthier Heroes, we provide support and accommodation for homeless veterans who often struggle with mental health and addiction, so we work closely with Fiona and Sid – particularly when people end up in A&E.

“I nominated them because they work tirelessly day and night, going above and beyond to make sure nobody slips through the cracks and the people who need us now after serving our country get the right treatment.

“It really is true when they say not all heroes wear capes. Sid and Fiona are truly amazing.”
