East Lancashire patients having partial knee replacement surgery could now be home the same day thanks to a new day-case procedure introduced by East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust (ELHT).
The procedure, carried out by surgeons at Burnley General Teaching Hospital, is the result of extensive work by orthopaedic, anaesthetic and physiotherapy teams who have created a safe pathway which focuses on patient confidence, safety and independence.
ELHT’s Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mr Dinesh Alexander, who led the procedure, said: “For patients in East Lancashire, the benefits are clear - reduced time in hospital, the comfort of recovering in familiar surroundings and fewer cancellations due to unforeseen delays caused by bed availability, meaning more people can receive their surgery sooner.
“Day-case partial knee replacement surgery offers patients the same high standards of care while enabling them to recover in the comfort of their own home. With the right protocols and patient support in place, this approach is safe, efficient and an excellent step forward for our service.”
Jason Fielding, from Blackburn, was the first patient to undergo the procedure. He said: “I was told beforehand that I would be the first patient to undergo this day-case procedure which made me feel honoured and incredibly grateful for the chance to be part of this innovation.
“I was able to return home around six hours after my operation and I am recovering well. It has been a great experience.”
The procedure is conducted by surgeons using a short-acting spinal anaesthetic. This offers the patient a smoother, more comfortable recovery along with physiotherapy to get the joint moving as early as possible. A follow-up phone call the next day provides additional reassurance, ensuring patients feel supported once they return home.
