East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust uses secure digital technologies to support clinical staff in creating accurate, timely and complete clinical records. These technologies may assist clinicians by processing spoken clinical information during consultations, where this functionality is enabled, to generate draft clinical documentation.

Where used, these technologies process personal data and special category data (including health information) where this is necessary for the provision of patient care. The information processed is used solely to support clinical documentation and becomes part of the patient’s health record.

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust remains the Data Controller at all times. Any external technology providers involved act only on the Trust’s documented instructions as data processors and are subject to appropriate contractual, technical and organisational safeguards to protect patient information.

Clinical staff remain responsible for reviewing, validating and finalising all clinical records. No automated clinical decisions are made using these technologies.

Processing is carried out in accordance with UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018, the common law duty of confidentiality, and the Trust’s information governance policies.

Further information about how the Trust uses patient information, including patients’ data protection rights, is available in the Trust’s Privacy Notice.
