Background

Mr Fizan Younis was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust in February 2013. His elective practice is exclusively Hand, Wrist and Elbow Surgery. He has been part of the Transformation Project that was responsible for the development of the purpose-built Elective Centre at Burnley General Hospital. He also jointly led the fracture clinic re-design project that has resulted in remarkable reductions in waiting times for fracture clinic appointments. He is currently striving to introduce patient-rated outcome measures as part of routine outpatient practice and is building on the his existing work on 'Wide-Awake' surgery at the trust. This would mean that a greater proportion of patients would have their surgery under local anaesthetic allowing them to return home on the day of surgery.

Mr Younis graduated from the University of Wales College of Medicine in Cardiff in 2002. He completed his basic and higher surgical training in the Northwest of England. This included an Upper Limb Fellowship at the Royal Bolton Hospital. He followed this up with international fellowships to leading Upper Limb Units in Nice and Zurich.

He was awarded an AO Travelling Trauma fellowship to McGill University Hospital in Montreal, Canada. Here he received advanced training in the treatment of upper limb Injuries. He then spent time at the Institut de la Main in Paris as part of the Training Programme Travelling Award awarded by the Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand (FESSH). Here he received specialist training in wrist arthroscopy techniques.

His specialist interests include Hand and Wrist Injuries, Dupuytren’s contracture treatment and Wrist arthroscopy.

Mr Younis is an enthusiastic educator and is heavily involved in undergraduate and postgraduate education. He has successfully completed the PGCE module for medical education which is a qualification awarded by the University of Chester. He is the Module Lead for Surgery at the University of Central Lancashire Medical school. He is responsible for overseeing the surgical and anaesthetic elements of the curriculum and assessment from year 3 onwards. He is also the Undergraduate lead for the Surgery and Anaesthesia Division at East Lancashire Hospitals Trust. This makes him responsible for overseeing the surgical education of the medical students from the University of Central Lancashire, Lancaster University and the American University of the Caribbean.

His current research interests include the use of Patient-Rated Outcome Measures in clinical practice and Collagenase injections in Dupuytren’s contracture treatment. He has a number of presentations and publications to his name.
