Background

Gwen commenced her nurse training in Blackburn in 1988, qualifying as an RGN in 1991. Working initially as a staff nurse and later as a sister within the obstetric and gynaecology operating suite, studying for a variety of further qualifications including a Diploma in Professional Studies; Teaching and Assessing in Clinical Practice and Tissue Viability.

She then transferred to the ENT/Maxillofacial surgical team in 2010 and was successful in gaining a place on the Master of Science Degree (MSc) in Advanced Practice in 2014. This Degree covering areas such as service development, advanced patient assessment and diagnostic skills and non medical prescribing. She has extended her clinical skills further by accessing an RCS surgical skills course, The North East skin surgery course and South Coast skin lesion recognition and Dermoscopy course

Gwen is an active member of the surgical team, independently undertaking minor operative procedures, assisting at complex head and neck surgical cases, supporting training requirements for doctors and nurses,  performing clinical examinations and clinical decision making predominantly within the skin service provided within the department.
