Dr Ariyaratnam has worked in the Trust as a Consultant in Rheumatology and Neuro-rehabilitation since April 1995. Dr Ariyaratnam performs Electromyography(EMG) for patients with suspected carpal tunnel syndrome and Ulnar Neuropathy. He developed an interest in entrapment Neuropathy and sees these patients in addition to training a Clinical assistant to perform these investigations. As part of the Neuro-rehabilitation service he developed a Botox injection service for spasticity and trained Neuro-rehabilitation Registrars from the Northwest Deanery.

Dr Ariyaratnam retired in September 2016 but continues to work as a part-time Rheumatologist in addition to performing EMGs. His interest in Rheumatology includes inflammatory arthritis and inflammatory muscle diseases. He runs his Rheumatology clinics in Rossendale Primary Health Care Centre and Pendle Community Hospital and the EMG clinics at Burnley General Hospital. He continues to be an Examiner for the MRCP(PACES) exam for the Royal college of Physicians of London.
